The scholarship program offers two categories: a degree program and a non-degree program. Each year, the degree program provides support to 100 to 200 Master’s students and 300 Ph.D. students, enabling them to pursue advanced studies at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), and various CAS institutes throughout China.

In 2022, a specialized sub-category of the CAS-ANSO Scholarship, called the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship, was introduced. This program, which aligns with the priorities of TWAS/UNESCO, places particular (though not exclusive) emphasis on applicants from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and women. Each year, up to 40 Ph.D. candidates from developing nations are selected for this scholarship by TWAS/UNESCO.

As the principal founding member, CAS is the primary sponsor of the CAS-ANSO Scholarship. TWAS and UNESCO, both founding members of ANSO, contribute to funding the ANSO-CAS-TWAS/UNESCO PhD Scholarship. ANSO invites all interested parties to collaborate in further diversifying and expanding the scholarship program.
